Nerve stimulation for overactive bladder after spinal cord injury

This study tests a non-invasive treatment called transcutaneous tibial nerve stimulation (TTNS) for people with overactive bladder caused by a spinal cord injury. The treatment involves applying mild electrical pulses to the ankle to help improve bladder control. If you qualify, you will receive the treatment and be monitored for safety and effectiveness.

Who can take part

  • Be between 21 and 70 years old
  • Have a spinal cord injury and neurogenic detrusor overactivity (overactive bladder due to nerve damage)
  • Be able to undergo a urodynamic study (a bladder function test)
  • Provide informed consent
  • Not have a pacemaker, implantable defibrillator, or other active implanted device
  • Not have ankle implants or open skin on the ankle/foot area
  • Not have prostate enlargement causing urinary obstruction
  • Not have a current urinary tract infection
  • Not be pregnant
  • Not have bladder cancer or bladder stones
  • Not have stress incontinence as the main bladder problem
  • Not have had prior PTNS, sacral neuromodulation, or recent botox bladder injections
  • Not have a history of psychiatric conditions
  • Not be in spinal shock
  • Not have lower motor neuron syndrome
