Hemopure for life-threatening anemia when blood transfusions aren’t an option

Who can take part

  • You must be at least 18 years old.
  • Your hemoglobin is 8 g/dL or lower, and you have active serious illness from low oxygen (for example, active bleeding, heart strain, confusion, kidney failure, or high lactic acid).
  • You (or your legal health decision-maker) must be able and willing to sign informed consent.
  • You cannot have a known severe allergy to beef products.
  • You likely cannot join if you have uncontrolled high blood pressure, certain serious heart or kidney problems that aren’t controlled, too much fluid in the blood, or a mast cell condition called systemic mastocytosis.
  • You likely cannot join if you are over 80 years old, or if doctors think you can receive regular blood transfusions.
