Who can take part

  • You must have a spinal cord injury, brainstem stroke, brachial plexus injury, or above-elbow amputation (or another listed cause) and have little to no useful hand function on one side.
  • You must be at least 1 year past your injury and have not gotten noticeably worse in strength or feeling in the last 6 months.
  • You must be able to join fMRI screening by showing your brain activates in a clear pattern during imagined or attempted movement or mouth movement.
  • You must be able to travel to the study site weekly (or live within 2 hours) for training during the study.
  • You must have a dedicated caregiver (and a backup) who can help with daily skin and site care for the implanted area.
  • You must be able to communicate in English, understand the study goals, and consent to participate (you or a legal representative).
