Who can take part
- You are an adult (18–90) admitted to the ICU for a main breathing problem and doctors expect ICU care for at least 48 hours
- You need a breathing tube and a breathing machine (intubation and mechanical ventilation) for respiratory failure
- You are not expected to die within 48 hours, and you are not on comfort-focused care (hospice)
- You are not pregnant and you are not a prisoner
- For the breathing scope (bronchoscopy) part: your oxygen/ventilator settings are not extremely high and your breathing status does not plan to be changed (no extubation/spontaneous breathing trial in the next 4 hours)
