Who can take part
- Be 18 to 60 years old and missing all or part of one or both hands and forearms
- Have no HIV infection at the time of transplant
- Have a negative donor–recipient compatibility test (crossmatch)
- Women who could become pregnant must have a negative pregnancy test before surgery and use reliable birth control for 1 year
- Be able to follow the study and care plan, including making appointments and taking medications as required
- Have enough muscle/limb structure for a functioning hand transplant (amputation can’t be too high near the upper arm)
