Upper arm amputation rehab study to improve hand control and feel

This trial tests a new approach for rehabilitation after an upper-limb amputation to help improve your ability to intentionally control a prosthetic and regain a sense of position (“proprioception”). You may be considered if you are planning an elective upper-arm or below-elbow amputation and can safely have surgery and follow up closely.

Who can take part

  • You’re age 18 to 65 (and can be male or female).
  • You are planning an elective amputation of one or both arms between above the elbow and below the elbow due to injury, birth differences, or progressive arthritis.
  • You are medically stable enough for general anesthesia (you’re considered low-risk, like ASA Class I or II).
  • You have no current serious infection in the arm that would be amputated.
  • You are not on medicines that weaken the immune system or affect healing, like immunosuppressants or long-term steroid therapy.
  • You can understand and communicate your recovery updates, and you’re willing to attend follow-up visits (including some visits/testing at MIT).
