Tests gluten-free diet for people with back pain and gut symptoms

Who can take part

  • You have inflammatory back pain symptoms: morning stiffness over 30 minutes, back pain better with exercise than rest, pain waking you in the late night, and/or alternating buttock pain
  • You must also meet the study’s gut condition pattern, such as confirmed celiac disease by blood tests and intestine biopsy changes, or another specific gluten/wheat-related syndrome
  • If you’re in the gluten/wheat-sensitive group, your blood tests for celiac should be negative and wheat allergy testing (IgE/skin tests) should be negative
  • You must be willing to follow an elimination diet first and then take part in controlled food challenges (including wheat, and sometimes other foods) if you qualify
  • You must not have other known stomach/bowel diseases or other diagnosed arthritis/rheumatic conditions that would explain symptoms
  • You should not have major nerve disease or a major uncontrolled mental health condition, and you must be physically able to take part in activities
