This study looks at how genetics and brain patterns are connected to laryngeal dystonia and voice tremor, including people with certain types of voice disorders. You may be asked to do imaging and voice-related assessments to help researchers understand what’s causing these symptoms.

Who can take part

  • Have a diagnosis of laryngeal dystonia (voice muscle spasms) or voice tremor, or be an eligible family member without symptoms
  • If you are a patient: your symptoms must match adductor or abductor laryngeal dystonia, and/or essential or dystonic voice tremor, or muscle tension dysphonia
  • If you are an unaffected relative: you must be related to someone with familial laryngeal dystonia, or the relative’s onset must be early (age 35 or younger) or typical (age 40 or older)
  • Be able to understand and give consent; also be mentally able to complete study steps
  • Speak English as your native language and be right-handed
  • Be able to do brain/voice imaging (avoid removable metal/ferromagnetic objects you can’t remove; no tattoos that block imaging)
