This study uses MRI scans to find “biomarkers,” or imaging clues, that may help predict how autoimmune liver conditions will progress in children and young adults. If you qualify, you may get MRI imaging to see whether it relates to future health outcomes.

Who can take part

  • Be between 6 and 23 years old.
  • Have a confirmed diagnosis of autoimmune liver disease: autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) or primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC).
  • Have not had a liver transplant before.
  • Do not have chronic hepatitis B, or untreated hepatitis C infection.
  • Be able to safely have an MRI scan (no pacemaker/metal implants that block MRI, and you can tolerate the scanner).
  • Not be pregnant; and none of the listed other liver conditions (like Wilson’s disease, alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, or glycogen storage disease) apply.
