Who can take part

  • You are scheduled for an upper endoscopy, colonoscopy, metabolic/bariatric surgery, or a liver transplant at Vanderbilt
  • If you’re having metabolic or bariatric surgery: you have obesity (BMI at least 40, or 35 with a health problem such as type 2 diabetes, fatty liver, high blood pressure, heart disease, or high cholesterol)
  • If you’re having a liver transplant: you have nonalcoholic liver disease or nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (fatty liver related to metabolism)
  • You do not have inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s or ulcerative colitis) or celiac disease
  • You do not smoke more than 7 cigarettes per day and you are not pregnant or breastfeeding
