Who can take part

  • You have cancer fluid around the lung (malignant pleural effusion) and are getting a drainage catheter placed
  • You can understand the study, consent, and answer symptom questions by phone or in clinic
  • If you’re an inpatient, you’re expected to go home within 5 days after the catheter is placed
  • You are not pregnant
  • You have not already had the same-side “inside-the-chest” treatment with doxycycline or similar medicine before
  • Your doctor says doxycycline is safe for you (no allergy) and your fluid buildup isn’t in a pattern that blocks treatment
