Brain-scan study in catatonia and hebephrenia with stable schizophrenia

This study measures brain signals during scans to look for patterns linked to two types (subforms) of psychotic disorders. If you have schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder and your symptoms have been stable, you may be able to help researchers understand these brain markers.

Who can take part

  • You are an adult (male or female) and agree to take part by signing the legal consent form
  • If you are a patient: you have schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder, and you meet criteria for periodic catatonia or hebephrenia
  • Your condition has been clinically stable for at least 2 months
  • You do not have a psychiatric history if you are a control (non-patient)
  • You do not have certain health issues like unstable medical illness, substance use problems, major depression, or a history of neurological problems (like epilepsy or brain injury/surgery)
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, you cannot join; and if you’re taking part in scanning as a control, you must be able to safely have an fMRI scan and avoid certain psychiatric medicines for 3 weeks
