Who can take part
- Has had a stroke within the last 2 weeks to 6 months, or at least 6 months ago
- Can sit up for at least 1 hour
- Has moderate to severe arm weakness (score less than 30 on a specific arm function test)
- No severe muscle tightness in the elbow, wrist, or fingers
- Able to perform a simple thinking and memory test (score above 21 on the MMSE)
- Not pregnant, without a pacemaker, and not currently in other arm therapy studies
