Inhaled steroid to prevent lung inflammation during cancer treatment

This trial tests whether breathing in steroid medicine before and during radiation can lower how often and how badly “radiation lung inflammation” (radiation pneumonitis) happens in people with lung cancer. If you qualify, it may help protect your lungs while you receive radiation with chemotherapy or targeted therapy.

Who can take part

  • You have non-small cell lung cancer that cannot be fully removed by surgery (locally advanced or metastatic, stages IIIA/IIIB/IV).
  • Your treatment plan includes radiation along with chemotherapy or targeted therapy.
  • Your cancer can be measured/checked on scans, and you have an expected survival of more than 4 months.
  • Your general condition is fair enough to study participation (ECOG 0–2 or a Karnofsky score of 70–100).
  • You can do breathing tests with good inspiratory flow (90 liters/min or higher).
  • You have NOT used steroid medicines by mouth or inhaler recently (you must not be taking systemic or inhaled corticosteroids).
