Who can take part
- Be 18 years old or older
- Have rectal adenocarcinoma confirmed by pathology (a lab test on tissue)
- Plan to start chemotherapy plus radiation before your scheduled rectal surgery
- Be willing and able to undergo definitive rectal surgery
- Do not have a history of radiation or chemotherapy to the pelvis/rectal area before (including pelvic external beam radiation, brachytherapy, or prior chemotherapy)
- Have not had other cancers before (except non-melanoma skin cancers) and not be immunocompromised
