Who can take part
- You need emergency surgery for an acute DeBakey type 1 aortic dissection
- You are over 18 and under 70 years old
- Your surgeon believes either of the two study operations could be safe for you
- Your blood pressure is not extremely low (systolic is not below 90)
- You have not had previous open-heart surgery through the breastbone (sternotomy) and you have not had a thoracic stent placed
