Who can take part

  • You are between 18 and 80 years old.
  • You have a specific type of aortic tear called acute DeBakey Type I, which needs surgery on the upper part of the aorta.
  • You are not in a coma, do not have permanent organ failure, and haven't needed heart massage to restart your heart.
  • The arch of your aorta (the curved part) is not wider than 4.5 cm.
  • You do not have a connective tissue disease (like Marfan syndrome) or a genetic condition affecting the aorta.
  • The initial tear in the aorta is not larger than 2 cm beyond the arch.
