Using EBUS to help diagnose a blood clot in the lungs

This study looks at whether a procedure called EBUS (a camera passed through the airway) can help doctors diagnose an acute pulmonary embolism—a sudden blood clot in the lungs—in critically ill, intubated ICU patients. If you’re eligible, EBUS may be done during bronchoscopy as part of your usual care to help confirm or rule out the diagnosis.

Who can take part

  • You are an adult (18 years or older).
  • You (or your legal decision-maker) can understand the study and sign consent.
  • You are in the ICU and are on a breathing tube (intubated).
  • There is concern for a new blood clot in the lungs, or it’s already been diagnosed.
  • A doctor must say you can safely have a bronchoscopy/EBUS procedure.
  • Your breathing tube is large enough (8.0 mm or larger), and lidocaine is safe for you.
