Study of TB flare-ups in people without HIV

This study looks at why some people with tuberculosis (TB) get worse or develop new inflammation after they initially start improving on treatment—called a “paradoxical reaction.” It collects blood and tissue samples to better understand these flare-ups and guide future care.

Who can take part

  • Be age 18 or older.
  • Have TB that is confirmed or strongly suspected, and you’re on TB medicine (ATT) or have finished it.
  • If you’re in the flare-up group: you must have had at least 2 weeks of TB treatment and then developed signs of a TB flare after initial improvement (like symptoms coming back, new swollen glands, worse scans, or higher inflammation lab tests).
  • In the control group: you must be 2 to 4 months after starting TB treatment, without the flare-up pattern being the focus.
  • You cannot have HIV infection.
  • Be willing to provide blood or tissue samples for future research and be able to give informed consent.
