Near-infrared testing to assess depression

Major Depressive Disorder

Part of Mental health clinical trials.

This study uses a near-infrared light test to measure things related to depression. It includes people without depression and people diagnosed with major depressive disorder receiving care at UCSF/SFVAMC, to see how well the test fits with depression status.

Who can take part

  • You must be able to sign informed consent
  • You must be over 18 years old
  • If you’re a control (not depressed), you must not have depression or major anxiety, psychosis, substance abuse, or other mood/personality disorders
  • If you have depression, you must have major depressive disorder and be getting depression treatment at SFVAMC
  • You must not have major memory problems (like dementia/Alzheimer’s)
  • You must not have certain brain/neurologic problems (such as stroke, tumor, or traumatic brain injury)

This study uses a special headband (TD-fNIRS) that measures brain activity to see if it can predict how well different depression treatments work. You would be starting a new treatment for depression (like ketamine, SPRAVATO, TMS, or antidepressants) and wear the headband before and during treatment.
