Who can take part

  • Be between 1 month and 18 years old, and born at more than 44 weeks gestation
  • Have PARDS (a serious lung condition) while on a breathing machine, with oxygen levels that meet study thresholds
  • Be enrolled within 72 hours after starting invasive mechanical ventilation (being intubated/placed on the breathing machine)
  • Be expected to need the breathing machine for more than 72 hours
  • Do not have certain conditions that make weaning unsafe or that block study breathing strategies (like certain severe airway, brain/pressure problems, or heart conditions)
