Numbing injection study for kids’ scoliosis back surgery pain

Who can take part

  • You are a child with idiopathic scoliosis (the cause is not tied to another condition like neuromuscular problems).
  • You are having one planned, single-stage posterior spinal fusion surgery (not a two-stage or unplanned staged surgery).
  • Your overall health is not too medically complex (ASA I to III).
  • You do not have a known allergy to lidocaine (a local numbing medicine).
  • You do not have major heart, kidney, or liver problems, or seizure history.
  • You are not in a weight range that’s too low or too high for age, and you do not have porphyria.

Pain control after scoliosis surgery: comparing two numbing medicines

This study compares two types of numbing medicine used during scoliosis surgery to see which provides better pain relief after the operation. One is a long-acting version (liposomal bupivacaine) and the other is a standard short-acting mix (bupivacaine with epinephrine). If you are a teen having surgery for Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis, this trial may help find a way to reduce pain and possibly lessen the need for opioids afterward.
