Pain control after scoliosis surgery: comparing two numbing medicines

This study compares two types of numbing medicine used during scoliosis surgery to see which provides better pain relief after the operation. One is a long-acting version (liposomal bupivacaine) and the other is a standard short-acting mix (bupivacaine with epinephrine). If you are a teen having surgery for Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis, this trial may help find a way to reduce pain and possibly lessen the need for opioids afterward.

Who can take part

  • You are between 10 and 17 years old.
  • You have been diagnosed with Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (the most common type in teens, not caused by another condition).
  • You are scheduled for a type of spinal fusion surgery called posterior spinal fusion to correct the curve.
  • You do not have a known allergy to numbing medicines (local anesthetics).
  • You are not currently taking strong pain medicines (opioids) for chronic pain.
  • You can read and speak English fluently.
