Who can take part

  • You’re age 18–60 (and if you can get pregnant, you must not be pregnant)
  • You meet diagnostic criteria for opioid use disorder and/or another substance use disorder for at least 2 years
  • You’re in a COAT-style treatment program (or a similar program the team knows) and, if you take medication for opioid/alcohol use, your dose has been stable for 7 days
  • You’ve been off opioids and other illegal drugs (except cannabis) and a urine test supports that
  • Your brain MRI shows the treatment target is visible, and you can report sensations during the procedure
  • You can sit still for about 2–3 hours and you understand and sign the consent form
