Testing an electrical monitor in moderately severe lung failure

Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS)

Who can take part

  • Be 18 years or older
  • Be on a breathing machine (intubated) for moderate to severe ARDS
  • Have ARDS severity consistent with PaO2/FiO2 of 200 or less (a blood gas test measure)
  • Be on continuous sedation, with or without paralysis
  • Be able to have the electrode belt safely placed for the monitoring (no chest burns, pacemaker/heart device issues, or major chest wounds that prevent placement)
  • Blood pressure and heart rate must be stable enough (systolic BP ≥75, MAP ≥60 despite medicines, and heart rate ≥55)
