Testing cooling treatment for severe lung failure in ICU patients

Who can take part

  • You are in a participating ICU and on a breathing machine (a tube in the windpipe or a tracheostomy).
  • You’ve been on the breathing machine for 7 days or less when screened.
  • Chest imaging shows problems in both lungs, and it’s not fully explained by fluid around the lungs, collapsed lung, or certain fluid overload.
  • Your oxygen levels are very low for ARDS (P/F ratio 200 or less) while PEEP is at least 8, or your team can estimate this from oxygen readings.
  • You (or a legally authorized representative) can give consent for the study.
  • The ARDS oxygen criteria (or the period when it qualifies) are met within 72 hours of enrollment/randomization.
