  • You are 18–75 years old
  • You were admitted to the ICU from a traumatic injury within 24 hours
  • You are on a breathing machine through a tube (invasive mechanical ventilation)
  • The ICU team expects you to stay in the ICU for at least 48 hours
  • Your hemoglobin level is not above the usual “normal” range used at your hospital
