Radiation planning to spare the opposite neck in head cancer

Who can take part

  • You agree to take part in the study and sign consent before any study tests
  • You’re age 18 or older, and your daily function is fairly good (WHO performance status 0–1)
  • You have invasive head and neck cancer of the mouth, throat, voice box, or lower throat (not other head/neck sites)
  • Your scan shows no cancer spread to the distant body, and specific lymph-node results in the opposite neck side
  • Your cancer treatment plan must be radical radiotherapy (with or without chemotherapy) decided by a tumor team
  • Your CT/PET scan of the neck is of diagnostic quality and meets the study’s measurements of node size and scan activity

This trial looks at whether giving less (de-escalated) radiation after surgery is as effective and safer for people with locally advanced head and neck squamous cell carcinoma who had a strong response to treatment before surgery. If you had no remaining cancer or only very small amounts of cancer left in the surgical specimen, this approach may help reduce side effects while keeping control of the disease.
