Breathing extra carbon dioxide during surgery to prevent brain injury

Who can take part

  • You have a confirmed acute type A aortic dissection.
  • Your doctors have decided you will undergo surgical repair.
  • Before surgery, you do not have new brain-related symptoms (like weakness on one side, trouble speaking, or a changed level of awareness).
  • You do not have a past stroke that left you with lasting nerve problems.
  • You should not have had previous heart surgery.
  • You must be able to safely have MRI; you also cannot have implants or devices that are not MRI-compatible.
