Who can take part

  • You are age 18 or older with an acute (new) hip fracture
  • You are scheduled for surgery to fix the hip fracture (operative fixation)
  • You do not have severe injuries to multiple body parts (not polytrauma)
  • You have not had prior surgery on the same (same-side) hip
  • You do not have a blood-clotting or blood-disease condition like Factor V Leiden or sickle cell anemia
  • You have not had a recent blood clot or heart/brain event in the last 6 months
