- You are 21 years old or older.
- You need a breathing mask (non-invasive ventilation) because your body has too much carbon dioxide (type 2 respiratory failure).
- You are not under a 'Do Not Resuscitate' order that forbids using a breathing mask (a 'Max NIV' order is okay).
- You have no known skull fracture or serious face injury that stops a mask or nasal tube from being used.
- You are not pregnant, a prisoner, or in a situation where you cannot give consent.
- You do not have unstable blood pressure, have not had a cardiac or respiratory arrest, and do not need emergency intubation.
