Metformin to improve walking in leg artery blockage

Who can take part

  • You’re a Veteran between 35 and 89 years old
  • You have intermittent claudication—leg pain that starts with walking and eases with rest
  • You’re on your best blood-vessel and heart medicines for at least 3 months (such as a statin, anti-platelet, blood pressure control, and counseling for smoking and activity)
  • Tests show blocked leg artery disease: ankle-brachial index (ABI) under 0.9, or ABI above 0.9 with other proof
  • Your walking test shows limited walking (at least 50 meters on a 6-minute walk) with pain starting by 400 meters, and you’re not using a walker
  • You do NOT have certain exclusions like diabetes, metformin use, severe kidney problems, or critical limb-threatening wounds
