Who can take part

  • You are African American and have early high blood pressure (stage I) based on your recent readings (systolic 120–139 or diastolic under 90).
  • You do not have diabetes.
  • You do not have kidney problems (your creatinine is not above 1.4 mg/dL).
  • You do not have certain heart conditions (like congestive heart failure or ongoing rhythm problems).
  • You are not currently using medicines that affect fluid balance or potassium (diuretics, including spironolactone) and you do not take NSAIDs regularly.
