- You have a planned back surgery (laminectomy) on 1 or 2 levels
- You can safely receive local anesthetic (no allergy to numbing medicines)
- You agree to take part in the study and sign consent
- You do not have serious ongoing heart, kidney, or liver problems, or nerve problems in the arms/legs not caused by your main condition
- You do not have active local infection at the surgical site
