Heat therapy to lower blood pressure in midlife and older adults

This study tests whether regularly using passive heat can lower your systolic blood pressure (the top number) and improve how your blood vessels work. If you’re eligible, you may be randomly assigned to try the heat therapy as a 6-month program.

Who can take part

  • Be age 40 or older and able to give informed consent (no known dementia, and a memory test score above 20).
  • Have casual systolic blood pressure between 115 and 159.
  • Be willing to be randomly assigned to the study group you’re assigned to.
  • Be healthy enough for heat exposure, based on history, exam, blood tests, and an EKG at rest and during an exercise test.
  • Be able to follow medication/supplement rules before testing and water-immersion sessions (some medications must be avoided for specific time windows).
  • Avoid regular very hard exercise (more than 4 heavy aerobic sessions per week).
