Who can take part
- You have HPV-related squamous cell throat cancer in the tonsil/oropharynx area that doctors say can be removed with surgery
- Your cancer stage is early-to-mid (T1 to T3, and N0 to N2) and has not spread to distant sites (M0)
- Your tumor must test positive for HPV using p16 testing (strong, widespread staining in most tumor cells)
- You must be able to have extra biopsies for research (including three small cup-forceps samples of the tumor, about 3 mm or more each) in addition to routine diagnostic biopsies
- You need strong basic health/brain-to-body function (ECOG 0 or 1) and blood counts and organ tests in safe ranges
- If you can become pregnant, you must have a negative pregnancy test right before treatment
