Who can take part
- You have a new diagnosis of HPV-positive oropharyngeal (head and neck) cancer that can be removed with surgery.
- Your cancer is stage I or II and has not spread to other parts of the body.
- You are 18 or older and able to care for yourself (ECOG score 0-2).
- If you smoke now, you must have smoked less than 10 pack-years (a pack-year is smoking a pack a day for a year). Former smokers who quit more than 10 years ago are eligible regardless of pack-years; if you quit less than 10 years ago, you must have smoked less than 10 pack-years.
- You have adequate kidney, liver, and blood cell counts (routine blood tests will check this).
- You are willing to have a biopsy of your tumor and a PET/CT scan before treatment.
