Cochlear implant study for one-sided deafness

Who can take part

  • You have one very poor hearing ear and one normal or near-normal hearing ear
  • The poor-hearing ear shows severe inner-ear (sensorineural) hearing loss on hearing tests
  • You are either age 18+ or age 5 to 17 years (with the other age limits followed)
  • You have tried a non-surgical treatment (like a hearing aid, bone-conduction device, or CROS) or can complete at least 2 weeks of trying
  • You can speak and understand English well enough to follow the study and give written consent
  • You can safely have surgery (no major ear/nerve/brain causes, no conditions that prevent surgery)
