  • You are age 18 or older
  • You are having planned (elective) surgery, not an emergency operation
  • Your surgery is a higher-risk gut or blood-vessel procedure, or an intermediate-risk surgery that involves an incision opening (laparotomy) and/or a hospital stay of at least 5 days
  • You can understand the study and sign consent to take part
