Who can take part
- Baby was born between 23 weeks 0 days and 28 weeks 6 days of pregnancy
- Baby was placed on a breathing machine (intubated) within the first 7 days after birth
- Baby has had a breathing machine for at least 12 hours and is ready to have the tube removed (extubated)
- At the time of tube removal, the baby’s age is under 32 weeks after the due date was counted in (post-menstrual age)
- Baby can have a small tube through the nose/mouth for the breathing measurement (no bleeding or other blockage concerns)
- Baby has no major birth defects that strongly affect the lungs, and no brain/nerve conditions that would affect breathing effort (except apnea of prematurity)
