Who can take part
- You must be 18 years or older and having cardiac surgery that uses a heart-lung machine (CPB).
- Your surgery should be aimed at a heart problem where correcting a congenital cardiomyopathy is not the main goal.
- You are not having a heart transplant or ventricular assist device surgery.
- Your surgery should not be urgent or you should not arrive in the operating room needing blood-pressure support medicines (vasopressors).
- Your team must be able to place an ultrasound probe through your esophagus (transesophageal ultrasound) and your neck spine must be stable.
- You must not have known reasons you cannot take milrinone or epoprostenol, such as certain valve/outflow blockage problems or an allergy.
