Who can take part

  • You are scheduled for planned (not emergency) coronary artery bypass surgery through a chest cut (median sternotomy).
  • You are between 18 and 70 years old.
  • Your overall health is classified as ASA II or III (mild to moderate risk before surgery).
  • Your heart's pumping strength (ejection fraction) is 35% or higher.
  • You do not have severe lung disease, kidney failure, anemia, or obesity (BMI over 35).
  • You have not needed a breathing machine in the 2 months before surgery.
