Preventing infections in blood cancer patients with low white cells

Who can take part

  • You are starting treatment for acute leukemia, or getting ready for a stem cell transplant (HSCT)
  • You can give informed consent (or your legal guardian can)
  • Your liver blood tests are not too high: bilirubin is within 3 times normal, and AST/ALT are within 5 times normal
  • You do not have an uncontrolled ongoing infection (bacterial, viral, or fungal) when you start
  • You are not being actively treated for a current urine infection (UTI)
  • You are not pregnant or breastfeeding
