Who can take part
- Be 18 to 75 years old
- Be admitted to the ICU for sudden, severe breathing failure from an infection in the lungs or elsewhere
- Have low oxygen levels despite support (oxygen level ratio fits the study’s cutoff) and use PEEP 5 or higher
- Your blood test results must show a stronger tendency to clot plus enough time for clot breakdown (specific lab cutoffs)
- You must be able to have the study blood tests and receive active ICU treatment; the team believes you can survive at least the next day
