Who can take part

  • You have chronic “degenerative” mitral valve leakage (mitral regurgitation) confirmed on a pre-surgery ultrasound test
  • You are able and willing to sign informed consent
  • This is planned as a first-time mitral repair (not repeat surgery for the same valve problem)
  • Your surgery plan does not also include major other heart operations (like bypass, aortic valve surgery, or certain heart rhythm procedures)
  • Your planned procedure is mitral valve repair, not mitral valve replacement
  • You can safely have a TEE scan (a probe that goes into the esophagus to guide the ultrasound)
