Who can take part

  • You are scheduled for elective (planned) heart surgery using a heart-lung machine, such as bypass and/or valve and/or aortic surgery.
  • The operation is a primary or repeat coronary artery bypass graft and/or valvular/ascending aorta surgery (not just any heart surgery).
  • Your surgery does not require moderate or deep cooling (hypothermic circulatory arrest).
  • Your surgery is not a transplant (heart and/or lung transplant).
  • Your surgery is not urgent or emergency (not within 24 hours).
  • You can follow the study steps and communicate in English, German, or French, and you can give consent.
