Half or full thyroid surgery for low-risk thyroid cancer

This study looks at people with low-risk thyroid cancer who have already had (or are about to have) surgery, comparing half-thyroid removal versus full-thyroid removal. It may help doctors choose the safest and most effective surgery for your cancer type and risk level.

Who can take part

  • You are age 16 or older.
  • You have (or had) a “low-risk” type of differentiated thyroid cancer (papillary or follicular/oncocytic/Hürthle cell).
  • Your tumor size is 4 cm or smaller, and it appears limited to the thyroid (or only minimal spread outside the thyroid).
  • Your lymph node involvement is either none or limited to 5 or fewer small cancer spots, with no spread outside the lymph node.
  • You have no distant spread (no metastasis), and your final surgery margins are not “R2” (meaning no remaining visible tumor).
