Who can take part
- You have a past heart procedure (stent/PCI or bypass/CABG) OR you have significant blocked heart arteries seen on a recent angiogram
- You are scheduled for an intermediate- or high-risk operation (such as abdominal/intraperitoneal, neurosurgery, major blood vessel surgery, or chest/thoracic surgery)
- If your surgery is planned to be only laparoscopic (small-incision) or endovascular (through blood vessels), you must have at least one specific heart risk history (like prior heart attack, heart failure, stroke/TIA, insulin use, or poor kidney function)
- You have NOT taken colchicine in the last month and you have no known colchicine intolerance
- You do not have severe kidney failure (very low kidney filtering or on dialysis), serious liver disease, or active infection at the time of enrollment
- You are able to consent and are not pregnant or breastfeeding, and you are not starting a competing study
