Who can take part

  • You are an inpatient (currently admitted to the hospital).
  • You are at least 18 years old.
  • Your depression is diagnosed as severe unipolar or bipolar depression, and your depression score is high (HAMD17 24 or higher).
  • You can understand the study and sign consent in writing.
  • If you can become pregnant, you must have a negative urine pregnancy test before starting.
  • You must be cleared by the anesthesia team to safely receive ECT (ASA level 3 or lower), and your antidepressant and antipsychotic meds must be stable for at least 7 days.
