Who can take part

  • You must be 18 or older
  • You must be eligible for the needed ear surgery (either cochlear implant or another middle-ear surgery)
  • If you’re in the cochlear implant group: you have severe to profound inner-ear hearing loss, with speech understanding at 50% or less
  • If you’re in the cochlear implant group: you have some remaining hearing measured on a hearing test (useful residual hearing) on at least two nearby pitches
  • You must be able to give written informed consent and have French social security
  • You likely cannot join if you have certain inner-ear complications, specific genetic test results, or recent infections/inflammation around the procedure
